At Furze Down School, our innovative goat programme has become an integral part of our therapeutic and educational approach, delivering remarkable outcomes for our students' development and wellbeing.
The journey began with our school community coming together in a successful fundraising initiative, where students, staff, and families worked collaboratively to bring this vision to life. Our students took pride in helping to construct and fence the paddock area, gaining valuable hands-on experience in the process. This preparatory work created a strong sense of ownership and accomplishment before our two friendly goats, Merula and Amahle, joined us from the Bucks Goat Centre during term time.
Through structured interactions with our goats, students develop essential life skills and emotional competencies that extend far beyond the paddock. Our carefully designed programme promotes:
Personal Growth
- Enhanced emotional regulation and self-awareness
- Increased confidence in handling responsibilities
- Development of nurturing and empathetic behaviours
- Improved ability to work independently and as part of a team
Practical Skills
- Hands-on experience in animal care and welfare
- Real-world vocational training opportunities
- Leadership skills through peer mentoring
- Understanding of routine and responsibility
Social Development
- Strengthened communication and collaboration skills
- Enhanced ability to work alongside others
- Development of mentoring capabilities through our Young Leaders program
- Increased social confidence in group settings
The impact of our goat programme extends into all aspects of school life, with students demonstrating improved focus, reduced anxiety, and better engagement in their academic studies. For our sixth form students, the programme provides valuable work experience and leadership opportunities, preparing them for future employment and independence.
Through our structured wellbeing sessions and Goat Club, we've created a unique learning environment that supports our students' social, emotional, and mental health while building practical skills for their future success.
Our partnership with the Bucks Goat Centre ensures expert support and guidance throughout the program, while our students benefit from the joy of caring for Merula and Amahle during the school terms.
