Cognition Framework
The Cognition Framework develops pupils' knowledge, understanding and skills across a broad range of academic and vocational subjects.
Drawing on both the Early Years Foundation Stage and the National Curriculum, it provides learning that is adapted to each pupil's developmental stage and individual needs.
Through exploration, investigation, creativity and real-life experiences, pupils develop an understanding of themselves, their communities and the wider world.
Working alongside the EHCP Developmental Framework, the Cognition Framework helps pupils build the knowledge, skills and confidence they need for life, learning, work and leisure.
Areas of Learning
The Cognition Framework includes:
– Literacy – reading, writing, composition and transcription.
– Mathematics – developing mathematical understanding and applying maths in everyday life.
– Understanding the World – project-based learning including science (with Forest School), design and technology, computing, history, geography, religious education and languages.
– Creative and Expressive Arts – project-based learning including art and design and music.
Preparation for Adulthood is embedded throughout the curriculum, developing pupils' knowledge and skills in employment, community inclusion and health. Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) and Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education are integrated within these areas.
In Key Stage 4 and Sixth Form, pupils also access vocational learning tailored to their interests, strengths and future aspirations.
