Our curriculum provides a framework that prepares pupils for life, learning, work and leisure.
At Furze Down, we recognise that our pupils' developmental stages are often significantly different from those of their mainstream peers. Rather than being based on age, our curriculum is shaped by each child's stage of development.
It has been carefully designed to prepare children and young people for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
Our aim is to help every pupil flourish in school, at home, in their communities and in adult life.
We build our curriculum around our pupils' individual needs, not around subject boundaries.
How Our Curriculum Works
Through our EHCP Developmental Framework and Cognition Framework.
When designing our curriculum, we draw on the requirements of both the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and the National Curriculum. These provide important reference points for knowledge, skills and assessment.
However, learning at Furze Down is organised around pupils' developmental needs, EHCP outcomes and preparation for adulthood.
Our curriculum combines two complementary frameworks.
The EHCP Developmental Framework
Matching the school's provision to the outcomes stated in the students EHCPs.
Developing the communication, emotional, physical, sensory and independence skills pupils need to engage successfully in learning and everyday life.

Preparation for Adulthood
At Furze Down pupils develop the knowledge, skills and independence needed for adulthood.
Preparation for adulthood is a golden thread that runs throughout our curriculum.
Across all phases of the school, pupils develop knowledge, skills and experiences related to employment, independent living, community inclusion and health and wellbeing
Developmental pathways
Pupils access learning through pathways that reflect their developmental stage rather than their chronological age.
This ensures learning is relevant, appropriately challenging and focused on each pupil's next steps.
Foundation Pathway
Building the foundations for communication, learning, relationships, wellbeing and independence.
Entry Pathway
Developing confidence, independence, subject knowledge and skills for everyday life.
Developing Pathway
Preparing pupils for greater independence, qualifications, employment and adult life.
Across all pathways, learning is matched to individual strengths, needs and aspirations, helping every pupil make meaningful progress.
